By May 1944, over 2,876,000 Allied troops were trained in England. The largest fleet in history, of more than 4,000 American, British, and Canadian ships, was waiting to proceed. More than 1,200 planes were ready to deliver troops behind enemy lines. General Dwight D. Eisenhower decided before dawn on June 5 to proceed with Overlord.
“Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!
You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. …
Your task will not be an easy one. …
The free men of the world are marching together to Victory !
I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!
Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Thank you to all the heroes and their sacrifices on June 6th, 1944 and the challenging weeks and months which followed !
